Bay Area Technology School Hires Seth Feldman as
New Permanent Executive Director
Experienced Bay Area Principal will Lead Next Chapter of Successful Oakland Charter School
It is our pleasure to announce that Bay Area Technology School, has hired D. Seth Feldman as its new permanent Executive Director/Principal to lead the school. He will begin January 7, 2019, but has already been busy working with the Interim Principal, Michele Schuetz, and Interim Executive Director, Kathleen Daugherty as part of a transition plan.
Dr. Feldman comes to Bay Tech from Cunha Intermediate School in Half Moon Bay, California where he served as principal for a year. While at Cunha, he implemented several school-wide initiatives designed to bolster student learning and wellness. Most notably he implemented AVID Excel, i-Ready, College Preparatory Math and a comprehensive all-school Kindness Campaign. Previously, he was the Vice Principal and Director of English Language Learners at Oak Grove Middle School in Concord, California where he developed a school-wide literacy program and created the ELD Summer Jump-Start Academy. At both institutions student performance increased dramatically (10% at Oak Grove and 6% at Cunha) and teacher retention was the key to success.
Prior to becoming an administrator Dr. Feldman was a classroom teacher where he primarily taught ELD, Reading and English classes. He taught at Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School (Alameda), Lincoln Middle School (Alameda), Mt. McKinley School (Martinez) and the Oakland Military Institute (Oakland). He completed all of his teaching credentials and his Tier I Administrative Credential at Saint Mary’s College of California. He cleared his CA Tier II Credential at the University of California Berkeley through the prestigious LSP program. Prior to jumping into education, he served as an attorney for non-profits.
Bay Tech has been led for the last several months by Interim Executive Director, Kathleen Daugherty and Interim Principal, Michele Schuetz. Mrs. Daugherty was brought on board to stabilize organizational leadership, improve district relations with their authorizer, Oakland Unified School District, and improve accounting, financial and HR systems. The hiring of Dr. Feldman is one of the final pieces needed to stabilize the leadership after adding two new board members, including parents of Bay Tech students and Oakland community members.
“I’m incredibly excited to have this opportunity to lead a school that is dedicated to providing excellent educational opportunities for Oakland students,” said Dr.Feldman. “I am ready to lead this organization into its next great period of success.”
“We were very deliberate in our search for a permanent ED,” said Mrs. Daugherty. “It was important we found someone with the right experience, education and commitment to educational equity. We were very lucky to have found Seth and the board and I are thrilled he will be joining Bay Tech.” He has already spent time on the campus meeting with staff and students and getting to know the community.
“The Bay Tech Board of Directors gave its enthusiastic, unanimous recommendation to Mr. Feldman,” said Bay Tech Board President Kairat Sabyrov, “His enthusiasm, dedication and whatever-it-takes attitude combined with his experience and education make him a perfect fit. We can’t wait for him to get started.”
