Short History

Bay Area Technology School, (BayTech) started its operation in Fall 2004 in downtown Oakland. BayTech has been established and operated by Willow Education (WE), a 501(c)(3) California non-profit foundation.A dedicated group of scientists and engineers in the San Francisco - Bay Area formed WE to promote high quality education in Northern California.The BayTech project accelerated after the $450,000 start-up grant from the State of California’s Public Charter School Grant Program (PCSGP) for developing a public charter school in Oakland with an emphasis on mathematics, science, and technology. The local community has welcomed BayTech since the very first day. In a very short time, BayTech has achieved organizational and financial stability, increasing academic achievements, and wide acceptance by the parents and the community as demonstrated in the rest of this report.

Use of multimedia devices and other technology resources in all classes enable powerful learning situations that aid students in extracting meaning out of complexity. Technology Integrated Education (TIE) integrates Math, Science, Social Science and Language Arts classes with technology education in a fun and comprehensive way.

Technology Integrated Education (TIE) aims to teach basic knowledge of computers and teach skills while integrating computers with core classes. Students gain an understanding of how computers operate and learn basic skills to successfully use programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Furthermore, they learn how to design websites and effectively use the Internet. Through the development of computer skills ranging from typing skills to using the Internet, they are able to take advantage of technology available for them today.

At a minimum, students spend 3 hours a week in front of a computer at Bay Area Technology School. Computer classes are integrated into core classes. Each student is provided his/her account and domain, keeping the privacy of each individual intact. Netsupport school program is utilized in the computer labs to enhance the interaction between the students and teacher.

AMSP

Advanced Mathematics & Science Program (AMSP) is an advanced program for “over performing” students with two components; advanced Math & Computer Science. Early math and science training by experts ensures that students have the background they need for higher education and careers in math and science. Specifically, AMSP utilizes prestigious math and science competitions at regional, national and international levels to motivate and train students. Some of these competitions are:
